Today with Toscana: Bagging Organic Material and More

Toscana Corporation has spent the last three years perfecting their organic compost and soils to create the Nantucket Soil Collection. Popular in bulk at the materials yard, each of the OMRI listed material in this collection is now in bags!

The Organic Compost process:

  • Toscana hired R. Alexander Associates, Inc. in Apex, NC to guide us through the process of getting our organic products OMRI listed, which we achieved with all four of our products submitted. Organic Compost, Organic Garden Soil, Organic Lawn Soil and Organic Screened Loam.
  • Our compost is made with 100% recycled non-woody yard waste such as fallen leaves, grass clippings and the remains of garden plants dropped off by local landscapers and homeowners. 100% locally sourced! Toscana is proud to say that we did not send one blade of grass to the landfill or anywhere else in 2022. Our plan is to recycle 100% of the yard waste dropped off to us in 2023.
  • Toscana uses the Aerated (Turned) Windrow process of composting. This type of composting involves forming organic waste into rows of long piles called “windrows” and aerating them periodically by either manually or mechanically turning the piles. These piles are 10’ high, 80’ long and 25’ wide. As our story of sustainability and recycling has spread, our customers and others have committed to bringing us their organic waste.
  • Toscana has leased an additional parcel of land from Nantucket Airport (Thank you ACK!) that will be dedicated solely to collecting, recycling and producing locally sourced soil.

Just a few weeks ago, Toscana began bagging the material. 100% Organic. 100% Recycled. 100% OMRI Listed. 100% Nantucket. In addition to the soil collection, we also have Quahog Shells, Mulch and Native Stone available in bags.
